Proffesor has been having to go out of town these past weeks and probably a few more in the next coming, I too had been going out and with some quilt had to decline a Friday or two when proffesor asked if anyone could cover the Friday evening class. Huge honor in my book.
This past Thursdays class proffesor mentioned to the class that if anybody could cover Fridays class then it would be a go to train for that day, I stayed quiet and left. Feeling somewhat obligated at the same time. Only I had planned to watch the Lakers & Milwaukee game! So by morning I just knew covering class was the right thing to do, so I sent proffesor a message saying I was available.
Was a little nervous about it, I haven’t taught a class since my Kali days, and teaching jujitsu is something I really have given a thought too this past decade. So in my head I thought maybe the KISS method would work.. Keep It Simple Stupid.
Small class, four white belts showed up to train. Two at first the other two would stagger in 15 minutes later, anyway the first two caught on quick to the armbar drill, the last two…were lost and had no clue how to swing their legs over the top of their partners head..I was dumbfounded. Something I could do in my sleep and these guys could not swing a leg up over to save their lives.
I meant to just focus on drills vs learning different techniques, its great but in my mind new techniques are useless if there’s no foundation. Watching white belts roll, I cringe sometimes.
So I kinda felt like whatever I was showing was met with some skepticism. So with half the class not feeling the drills I tried showing the three attacks every white belt should know… Arm bar, Uma Plata, to Triangle Combo… One responded isn’t that a Kimura? I was slowly growing frustrated. So the go to win strategy for a good class? “Ok it’s time to roll”!!
Turned out great that I did roll, with the heavier white belt too. I’ve had some difficulty rolling with stronger heavier guys, as at 5’ll and 200 pounds, it’s rare when that happens. And to my surprise, and I probably shouldn’t be, I did better than expected. For the first time I felt like I had control of most situations my rolling partner and I were in. Felt good. Felt like progress.
